Maybe You didn't Strip???

After 2 years of jumpin' in and out of perl & CGI and all that shebang, finally, today I got my first script up and running!!!

But before I write all about it... I want to put this down here:

If you ever get this error message - Maybe you didn't strip carriage returns after a network transfer? when you try your CGI / perl scripts, it doesn't mean that your script is in error.

After extensive research on the WWW, there seems to be much of it happening across the web and the error occurs in the way you edit and/or upload the script.

Of course, there is a perfectly scientific explanation for this but right now I am too green to explain here. Something to do with editing your perl scripts in UNIX and not DOS and uploading in ASCII and not Binary and blah.. blah.. blah!!!

Possible solutions

Just use Notepad (or WordPad) to edit and like the good Web recommends, upload the script(s) in ASCII mode and NOT binary (OR AUTO) to your web server if you use a FTP program.

Also, if there are TEXT files as part of the script and/or in the same directory, upload them in ASCII mode too, when using an FTP program.

If you use Tripod to host your site like me, then try this (a bit cumbersome but effective and one less error to worry about)...

Just edit the script you are modifying using WordPad or Notepad on your PC then open the SCRIPT editor of Tripod on the web and paste the script onto the editor and click on Submit!
